Musings of a Physio Student

  1. Text

    Crabby’s one last entry.

So I actually ignored my laptop for a good 4 days or so, after returning from overseas because I didn’t want to deal with what I am about to write here. Escapism works for me in some ways, till I realise that I cannot escape from things any longer (duh).

I started writing on this blog since November 2010. The primary aim of this blog was to increase the awareness of physiotherapy (got extremely irritated at people thinking of us as masseurs), and also to help my juniors/prospective students gain an idea of what student life is like, how I coped and a platform for me to give whatever advice that I could dish out, whether people wanted it or not. Also attempted to expose the various faces that physiotherapy has, by interviewing numerous experts in their chosen fields. Because that was what I wished I had.

It is now May 2012. & I have decided to leave this blog.

Though some parts of me wished I didn’t have to do this, majority of me knows that I have to. The first question would naturally be why, but pardon me for most of it are personal and selfish reasons. But I do feel that I have done what I felt was my best for this blog, for the past 1.5 years, juggling everything that all you people are juggling too. And I don’t know how to give more, not on this platform at least, not anymore.

The second question might be, am I going to continue writing. I have always loved writing, it probably is a close tie to my love for healthcare, just that I figured the latter would bring me a more stable income. Writing is my best form of personal expression and it is my outlet. So back to answering the question (see, writers have a way to just digress), I think the answer is a yes. But, I don’t know where and I don’t know when. & I Don’t know how to go about doing it either. So, I am still sitting on it. Though whatever that happens, I will be starting on a clean slate, making no forms of connections to this blog whatsoever.

At no risk of sounding cocky, I believe that this blog, has at some point or another, helped a person or two. & I am humbled and thankful that you have let me be that part of your life. Because I know that the purpose of this blog was achieved, whether the people whose lives I made a difference in, may very well just be a single digit.

Would just like to say thank you to the faithful people following me (who did not disappear at all when I was on my hiatus), am very grateful. And to all the people - lecturers/friends who have contributed to this blog.

Today, I won’t sign off as Crabby. My name is Huimin. I am a NYP Physiotherapy graduate of 2012. I served as Vice President in the 1st Singapore Physiotherapy Student Council. I am a scholar. I am a happy child of God.

Saying all that has a purpose. Because if any one of you (juniors or interested students alike) reading this, needs any form of help or advice about anything at all (refer to paragraph above), get in touch with me. I really would like to get to know you and help you. You can reach me at chuahuim@gmail.com (please don’t abuse my personal email address). I promise to help you the best way I know how.

I have no idea what Fatty intends to do with this blog. But I am going to take my leave and let her work her magic. :)

Once again, thank you for being with me on this journey. I have had fun contributing to this blog.

Hang tight people! & All the best in whatever and whereever.

    Love,

    Huimin.

    Some useful links maybe.

Dug out some posts from my archive, wrote around this time last year. Hope it helps you settle in with your new academic year. All these represent my own personal opinions. :)

Year 1s, you might find this useful.

Year 2s, here you go. Click here. I kinda forgot I bought my stethoscope in year 2 until I read this post, and I also forgot the painful times learning how to listen to lung sounds till I read this. It’s been two years! All the help you need for reading Chest Xrays over here.

Year 1s and 2s, I have many useful posts to read, if you can spare the time. They contain how I managed my first prac exam, may it be in year one or in CP etc etc. And for year 2s, there are also numerous posts where I uploaded clips on listening to lung sounds. I am sure you will find them useful. It is just too many for me to copy and paste, so I would just encourage you to go to archives and click on “May 2011.” :)

Year 3s, I have nothing much for you. Just perhaps my rantings in the year of 2011 throughout my school year, especially clinicals. Perhaps writing was my way of coping (actually it still is) and I wrote about it, sincerely hoping that in some way or another, it might let you know that you were not alone, you are not alone and you will never be alone.. and that you will find your way of coping too.

As my friend used to tell me, “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” & I truly believe that for you.

    X, Crabby.

    WELCOME YEAR ONES!

I got wind that today is your orientation day, and I hope you enjoyed yourselves! Council must have put a lot of hard work (amidst having their clinicals) in preparing for your very first day with the physio family. So Kudos to them!

The video above is from last year’s welcome tea/orientation. The year threes then put this up for them. Very two talented and amusing friends of mine. So as the song ends off, “Welcome to physiotherapy!”

I have since graduated. & To all, I am aware that I haven’t been posting much but more of just reblogs and stuff.

To be honest, I am pondering what my next step with this blog should be, and while there are many ideas that I have and want to share, I am still thinking twice about it. So bear with me and the boring-ness of the blog currently.

Have decided to take a two week hiatus. Family commitment beckons. Will be back on the 28th, hope to see you guys still hanging around. Will leave a list of links that will be helpful to starting school.

& To the coming year 3s, you and I know that this year is daunting. But would just like to encourage you to speak faith, and not fear. Your mind is an awesome manipulative tool, and you are the owner of it. So wherever your thoughts bring you, know that you can control it. (Practice makes perfect)

    See you around. :)

    X,

    Crabby.

/edit, if you’re wondering about the stuffed toys… We use them during our paediatrics module to simulate a real baby.. Cute huh! :) it was fun and even more interesting with an awesome awesome lecturer teaching. Sorry about the shakiness of the video. Fits of laughter was the culprit.

    Anemia.

    fuckyeahmedicalstuff:

    What is anemia?

Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal. The normal level of hemoglobin is generally different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13.5 gram/100 ml and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 gram/100 ml. These definitions may vary slightly depending on the source and the laboratory reference used.
